In the Spirit of The Nation’s Founding Fathers, First National Bank Declares Their Independence

Fiercely Independent Since 1864 and Proud of It

When you walk into the First National Bank of Newtown, PA, you see something unusual: A Declaration of Independence. Since 1864, The Bank has served the residents of Bucks County, a suburb located just Northeast of Philadelphia, with an unyielding commitment to local ownership, operation, and investment.

As a means of providing the highest level of customer service and convenience, the $520 Million in assets Bank operates 12 full service branches, utilizes a full transactional based Internet Banking application, and in 1996 was one of the first financial institutions in the US to implement check imaging.

While the Sprit of Independence guides every relationship the Bank forms with it’s customers, it also guides the Bank’s relationships with technology vendors.

So when the Bank was faced with a situation of upgrading its check imaging solution, the Bank utilized the opportunity and their extensive check imaging experience to evaluate the various systems in the marketplace.

One key aspect of the new check imaging solution was improved integration with the Bank’s existing core processing application, provided by Fiserv’s Information Technology (ITI). It was mission critical for the systems to communicate seamlessly and flawlessly with the exchange of files and information.

The Bank Selects ImageCentre

After performing extensive due diligence, The Bank partnered with an authorized BankWare reseller, Pro-Soft Inc. for ImageCentre check imaging software.

A major differentiator in the ImageCentre application is its Browser-based architecture. This “thin-client” design enables the Bank to overcome the hurdles associated with “fat-client” and “proprietary” client-server based solutions in the marketplace today. Obstacles overcome include extensive client side maintenance (software installation, upgrades, support), reduced client side licensing, and improved workstation flexibility.

Another benefit of the ImageCentre implementation was the time savings when compared with their previous imaging solution. Before ImageCentre, the Bank had an attended night shift operation to ensure images were transferred and reconciled successfully from the capture server database to the image server database. With ImageCentre, images are populated in the single Oracle database in real-time as they are captured, eliminating the costly and time-consuming image transfer process inherent with many imaging systems.

The real-time database approach also provides another benefit – anyone can research items immediately after being captured. This aids the Bank by providing the most up-to-date information about an account and the items that customer may have presented.

Imaging has also brought the Bank tremendous reductions in the mailroom staffing, as the production of image statements has been outsourced to streamline the entire delivery process.

Image Archival Upgrade to DVD

The Bank was able to upgrade their image archival solution from 5.25” optical media to DVD-Rom. This upgrade provides 3.3 terabytes of storage near-line, an eight-fold increase from their previous 400 GB solution. Additionally, the price of DVD-Rom media is substantially lower, providing tremendous cost reductions.

Integration with ITI

The ITI and ImageCentre solution function seamlessly with the exchange of DDA files, CD files, Savings files, Loan files, CIF files, FMS files, master files for applications, statement print files, NSF and decision files, exception item files, and transaction files.

Additional integration has been implemented enabling search and query tools for check images through ImageCentre Research utilizing ITI assigned item sequence numbers.

First National Bank’s ImageCentre Solution

The Bank utilizes ImageCentre’s Image POD, Power Encode, Courtesy Amount Recognition (CAR), Legal Amount Recognition (LAR), Image Research, Image Statements, Image NSF Notices, Image Deposit Corrections, and other applications to process their average volumes of 45,000 items per day. ImageCentre also operates in conjunction with the NCR 7780 for Image Capture and Dell servers and workstations.
